Frequently Asked Questions
The baptism is a step of obedience and signifies the laying down/dying to the old life and being raised into a new life. Jesus was baptized by John before He could start His ministry; signifying for Him that from that day onwards His ministry would lead Him into a different life than He was living in the natural before that moment. Another example is the Ethiopian Eunuch who was reading from the book of Isaiah. Read Acts 8:26 onwards.
SIN is the term used for our sinful nature – the inherent desire to do wrong that lives within us all the time. This was transferred into us when Adam decided to disobey God in the Garden of Eden. SINS are the wrongful deeds that come from this sinful nature. Sins are single events of doing wrong; like continuously telling lies, cursing a person for doing something to us, keeping a grudge when we have been hurt, stealing something from someone, etc. There is no degree of sin that is worse than the other. Lying is not lighter than murder in the eyes of God. Therefore He made sure that He sent His Son to do away with our sinful nature – so that the sins that flow from that nature can stop. Important then is the acceptance of Jesus as our personal Saviour and Lord because if we reject Him, the sins won’t stop because the sinful nature will not change. There is no remission for sins.
The full answer depends on your “type” of trouble. However, what the preachers mean when they tell you that your troubles are over is meant in a spiritual way. In order to understand “spiritual”, we need to understand some other basic principles and for that we need to go to the beginning. New born babies understand very little when they just come into the world. So we apply the same principle with spiritual new born babies.
Before the foundation of this world, God created us. Our human spirits were created and when our mothers conceived us, that human spirit became alive in the fertilized female egg. A physical new life has started. The human spirit in this fertilized egg is fully developed with all that God has put in it, but the body has only started to grow and the soul of the new baby to be is empty for all intents and purposes. When this baby is born, it can do limited impulsive things, but as it grows, its soul is filled up to understand more things. Later the soul becomes active and starts to dictate the life of the individual. If the child has parents that teach it about God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that soul may have some data about the knowledge it was given and later may act on it to make a decision to accept Jesus as his saviour. Even for those whose parents did not place any data about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit in the hard drive of the soul, there may be a day of choice to accept Jesus as Saviour. After accepting Jesus, all the data that was stored in the soul is not automatically erased. That is not how things work. So whatever was wrong before IS STILL WRONG, except that the Spirit of God has now renewed the human spirit in the new born child of God. The mind still wants to think as it was used to, but we are given instruction to renew our minds daily by taking in the Word of God and letting the word give us different information that will allow us to change our perception of things as they were. We then make conscious decisions to change our behaviour and the way we see things and our response to things begin to change. This is the life of walking in the Spirit and it takes constant effort and focus to attain.
So when the preachers say that our troubles are over, they mean it from the stance of bringing our previous troubles to Jesus who will help us to resolve the issues in the way it was always meant to be. Unfortunately, the enemy knows what we struggle with and will always try to rob us of our joy, kill our spiritual belief and then destroy our future by keeping the things we did wrong in the past or keep doing wrong in the future in our face. It is now up to us to consistently strive to change that behaviour but only with the Holy Spirit’s help and belief in the word of God are we forgiven and set free. In this way, we will slowly but surely change the image we carry to the outside world and people will see that we have changed and so our old troubles will disappear.
Be warned, that every old conquest won, will be replaced by a new one. So prepared to face new issues all the time. But then, if we go to school, don’t we go through grades to get a higher education? How else will we learn the strength and power of God’s promises to us and how will we know our own strength and faith in Him if we are not tested and tried?
